How Color Saved Me

How Color Saved Me

Do you remember a time when you felt utterly defeated? It seems like yesterday when I found myself feeling this way. I felt my my self confidence slipping away. What would you do? I went shopping. I didn't know what I was looking for, I just knew that I wanted something. I couldn't find it so I began making.

Am I a Hoarder or a Genius?
Studio tour : Part 2

Welcome back to the Moo-Young studio!  In our previous episode, I took you through the nitty gritty tour of our workspace, and mentioned our piles of leather scraps nearly a dozen times.  With such emphasis on saving the cast-off material, there certainly must be importance behind it. As promised, we will now plot out the many projects a single hide can feed, and both how and why we end up with towers of leather trimmings.  In this chapter, I’d like to take you on a brief journey through our process of creating a zero waste brand using our shibori suede. Origami Unfolded

Origami Unfolded
At the end of 2018, you may recall that we had an ongoing interactive origami installation. . . Now, the year is 2019, and it’s time to unleash these thoughts and hopes into the universe!  There’s great release in the act of unfolding; it’s a relaxing of structure, and a simplifying of form.  And, most importantly, these messages are now exposed for others to absorb and contemplate. The net has steadily been amassing these inscribed star boxes ever since, and will continue to fill until the end of 2018. Continue reading

Weaving: A journey through material and process

Weaving: A journey through material and process

I got the chance to talk with designer Tiffany Ju of BZR about her latest work:

"I'm at the point in my creative life where I am really yearning to create more meaningful work. The search for that meaningful work is really hard and also exciting."

Kimono Obsession

Kimono Obsession
People often ask why we carry kimonos. For Francine Moo-Young, the collector and curator, that's one of the easiest questions to answer. She's inspired by the cut, the colors, the patterns and the history of the garment. "When I see a kimono I like, my mind floods with ideas. Some times those ideas are so abstract it's hard to see the path to where it leads. The ideas come to me like a cluster spreading out in all different directions."  Continue reading
